Our Impact

Through your generous support of time and money, the McGilvra PTA is able to ensure McGilvra is remains the special place our children love. Many programs that significantly contribute to  the McGilvra experience are funded through our PTA, not by Seattle Public Schools.

Student Learning Enrichment We underwrite, in whole or in part, the school’s Art Instructor, School Counselor, Instructional Assistant, Math Enrichment, Office Assistant, Reading Enrichment, Special Education Teacher and Tutors. We’ve provided teacher training including Greg Tang Math Training, Inclusion and Bullying training and literacy. Grant request we’ve funded include Authors and Illustrators of the Oregon Train: Road to Destiny books as part of the spring Oregon Trail unit. School Counselor Clare Sommers is driving social emotional empathy RULER training,  as well as annual library grants.

McGilvra GardenOur beautiful volunteer-led garden has evolved into a living laboratory, where children from all grades focus on eco-literay , working with community partners from FarmRaiser, Montlake and Stevens Elementary.

Student Programs – Over one-third the our students engaged in before or after school enrichment programs including STEM, Chinese, cooking, and chess.

In-School Community EventsThe Multicultural Potluck, Fall Harvest Dance, Winter Bingo Night, Spring Pi and Science Night, Spring Garage Sale each brought students, parents and staff together for fun, community-building events. Addition, we held bi-monthly parent coffees for informal drop-off chats.

External Community Events – We spearheaded the East Cherry YWCA Food drive, sending 40 bags of much needed toiletries and groceries to its food bank program; coordinated Mitten Project, stuffing over 200 mittens for over 30 families to make a potentially bleak holiday brighter. Walk for Water Simulation enabled our children to experience first hand how their peers in developing nations obtain a days’ worth of water. Each year we join in  the Madison Valley Spring Clean, where 40 community members come together to spruce up one of the school’s key neighborhoods.

Operations & Safety and Security – Our grant ensures emergency supplies will be refreshed and provides for other  improvements to the schools’ safety and security.

Legislative Advocacy – As needed we advocate for such things as special education, safety and security, and funding.
